For my final project of the school year, I ask that my students read a biography/autobiography of someone who is a philanthropist, humanitarian or something else that I cannot remember right now. Then I ask that each student locate a community service that they find meaningful and spend some time helping out in that area. I got some GREAT projects. Kids went to animal shelters and played with the animals and cleaned cages. Some kids collected food from people in their neighborhoods and donated it to various shelters. One kid organized a tennis tournament and raised over $200 for the Andy Roddick Foundation. Two girls collected purses for Purses with a Purpose. The kids had to get pictures of where they worked and had to get someone to take pictures of them working. Some of the projects made me tear up because they were so good and the students were so obviously affected by what they saw and did.
And then. THEN. I got this project today.

All I can say to that is, parents, what you say is heard and taken to heart by your children. How you act is directly emulated by your sons and daughters. Think. Please think before you say anything in front of your children. They listen to what you say and repeat it to others. They watch you more than I think you realize.
Well, first of all, I have to admit I had a pretty good laugh when I read that. Then I read it to Mindy. We had an interesting conversation about the grade it deserved. Let us know what you gave it, if you can.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty funny and sad. I sent it on to my MIL who is a former teacher.
ReplyDeleteWow! That is a sobering reminder that kids do become "little me's..."
